Arts in medicine from antiquity to postmodernity
Summary
This volume is a continuation of consideration includet in author's previous books titled: "Art. and Therapy" (1993) and "Culture Therapy. The use of arts and cultural-educational activities in medical care" (1994). The main task of the book is to present a broad panorama of views on application of arts in medicine.
The book narrative is organised around three concepts:
- necessity of holistic approach to treatment and edcation,
- healing power of art.,
- health as performance and creative effort.
The book consists of the Foreword, The Introduction, thirteen chapters and Post scriptum.
The first chapter includet varius descriptions of diseases and its treatment derived from belles-lettres. The aim of the chapter is to make of physicians more sensitive to patient emotions, pain, anxiety and suffering. In the second and third chapters I consider the holistic model of medicine and its ancient origin, especially the history of the famous asklepieion in Epidauros. The forth chapter is devoted to analysis of health concepts. Regarding the performance metaphor model of health we could indeed ask if the model actually consists of metaphoric terms, or if the terms reflect the nature of therapeutic relationship or core characteristics in basic form of well-being and illness.
The fifth, sixth and seventh chapters refer direclty to music therapy, its application in obstetric ward and in gerontology; diffrences between music therapy and music medicine. Next, the author analyses the art. therapy as a method of treatment and education of children with special needs.
In the last part of the book there is an emphasis on a problem of application of old methods in new kind of therapy: narrative therapy and reminiscence therapy.
The chapter twelve will shed light upon the application of postmodern theories in the field of science and arts. It is focused on a paradigmatic shift of attention in theories concerning the methodology of research in medicine, health sciences and the therapy.
Educational dimension of "Arts in medicine" as a subject in curriculum on Medical Faculty is discussed in the chapter thirteenth.
The Post scriptum refers to the Introduction and presents personal author's atitude to medicine connected with arts.
